Matera, the eternal city, the oldest urban settlement in which life has flowed uninterruptedly from prehistory to the present day.
A small great jewel in the deep South of Italy that has decided to challenge time, winning its challenge by becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site and European Capital of Culture for 2019.
Matera is located in the Lucanian part of the Murgia, a vast karst plateau whose predominant element is rock (from “murex” in Latin).
The first very important prehistoric settlements and the ancient Sassi districts overlook the Gravina torrent, a small watercourse that originates in Puglia and flows into the Bradano.
This small torrent over the millennia, gently digging its bed, has created a kind of natural canyon around itself.
The typical rock of this territory is tuff, the relative ease with which man has been able to work it has allowed the people of Matera over the millennia to be able to shape and dig into the steep descents of the canyons to build homes and churches.
The surrounding territory has thus been adapted to the different needs of man, to the point of becoming part of a complex water conservation system.
